What La Veleta is like
La Veleta is one of the more characterful parts of Tulum town. It has been developing for years and is now a proper neighbourhood in its own right, but construction is still part of the landscape and some streets feel much more finished than others.
Unlike the more master-planned feel of Aldea Zama, La Veleta grew more organically. Private villas, small apartment buildings, jungle lots, cafes and restaurants have all appeared independently, so the architecture can change completely from one block to the next. That slightly unpolished mix is part of what gives the area its personality.
The neighbourhood has also developed its own food and social scene, particularly around Calle 7 Sur. Places like Otti Cacao and Smoothies, Raum Art Gallery and La Pizzine helped give La Veleta its more relaxed, independent feel, while newer additions such as Veleta Market have made the area busier in the evenings.
It still has more of a bohemian, neighbourhood feel than Aldea Zama or the Hotel Zone: smaller places, casual dinners, coffee and cacao spots, music, and venues where you might stay for a few hours rather than somewhere built around a big night out.
- On foot
- If you stay close to Calle 7 Sur, there is plenty you can walk to for breakfast, coffee, dinner or drinks. La Veleta as a whole is less consistent: paving, sidewalks and lighting vary from street to street, and active construction is still common. For the beach or other parts of Tulum you will normally want a bike, scooter, taxi or driver, and the beach is not realistically walkable from here.
- Best for
- Travellers who want more neighbourhood character, independent places to eat and drink, private villas and a less polished side of Tulum, and who do not mind some construction or uneven streets.
